Founded in the aftermath of the Norman conquest, Norwich Castle is the only Norman stronghold in East Anglia. It was besieged on numerous occasions and even captured by Louis, the Dauphin, heir to the King of France.

After the military importance of the castle declined, the castle became a prison which it remained until 1887. In 1894 the Norwich Museum moved to the castle and has since operated in this capacity.

The most sighted ghost of the castle is of a woman wearing a black dress. She was first recorded 1820 by several prisoners who were reportedly scared half to death. She is thought to be wearing Victorian clothing and wanders around the art exhibition area of the museum, turning a corner and then vanishing. She has also been seen in the grounds of the castle and is believed to be the spirit of Martha Alden who lived at Attleborough with her husband who she murdered in 1807. She was hung in July of the same year and has haunted the castle ever since.

A moated medieval castle in the parish of Etton in Cambridgeshire, Woodcroft Castle was erected at the end of the thirteenth century. The west range and a circular corner tower survive, with a later wing adjoining to the northeast. It is a private Grade II building.

The castle was held by the Royalists under the command of Michael Hudson during the English Civil War and was successfully besieged and taken by Parliamentary forces in 1648. Hudson was captured and sent to London, however, he escaped and returned to Woodcroft to defend it. Later, with Parliamentary troops swarming over the castle, Hudson was thrown from one of the parapets but managed to cling onto a stone gargoyle. To remove his grip, an enemy soldier severed his fingers and he fell into the moat before swimming away. He was again captured and this time killed by a musket blow to the head before his tongue was cut off.

Hudson’s ghost is said to haunt Woodcroft Castle today. Sometimes you can hear him shouting or begging for mercy or screaming. It is said that he is often seen around the time of his death, reenacting his fall into the moat.
